My Immigration to the U.S.

My name is Mohamud Hassan and I am from Somalia. I came to the United States in October 2006 in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. It was challenging because I didn't speak a word of English. Also It was challenging for me too because I came in October 31st which is a bit cold and I felt very cold and uncomfortable. After two weeks I went to school and my biggest challenge understood the teachers and classmates. There were a few Somali students who attended the school that I went to. They helped me as much as they could, but the problem was they were not always around me.

Do you think language unites or divides us?

I believe that Language can divide people because everyone has his/her own language. For example, I was working with a group of people that  speak the same language except me, even thought we were all speaking English while we were working, but when we took a break we sat together and all of the sudden they  started speaking their own language with each other and I  felt left out and moved to different table to sit because I felt that I wasn't belong that table.  So, that is one way that can show you how language divides people.
